Jim has done numerous watercolor studies of songbirds, typically arranged in groups of three. “I think of them as triads,” he explains, referring to the musical term for a three-note chord. “One note can stand alone. But when it’s combined with the other two, it becomes part of something greater.” The trick, Jim says, is to find which three note to play.
